A Donegal Town councillor has called for a public consultation before any planning decision is made on a proposed substantial extension to McCafferty’s Bar in Donegal Town.
Cllr Jimmy Brogan said the town’s unique character must be protected, describing it as “a historic market town with a traditional history spanning back hundreds of years.”
He said while he welcomed investment, any development which could affect the town’s reputation needed careful consideration.
“It is essential that any changes in the streetscape will not take away from the overall character of the town,” Cllr Brogan said.
He warned that the proposed extension risked “changing the unique atmosphere of the town itself, which is one of the busiest tourist hotspots in the Northwest.”
Cllr Brogan said he would raise the matter at Today’s Donegal Municipal District Meeting, where he intends to call for a public consultation before any planning permission is granted.
