A new administrative position should be created to help progress the future development of the Cathedral Quarter in Letterkenny, according to Cllr. Tómas Seán Devine.
He praised the work that has been carried out to date, and in particular the contribution of local man Donnan Harvey for more than a decade.
At the May meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council, he called for the creation of a new Administrative Officer post “to focus on the continuing successful development of the Quarter” and the overall town centre regeneration.
Cllr. Devine expressed a fear that if Mr. Harvey were to move on to somewhere else the work would “half collapse”.
In an official reply, Cllr. Devine was told that the local authority would continue to engage with the Cathedral Quarter Group.
As part of the implementation process, the Council “will be looking to put the necessary structures in place in terms of the business and operational arrangements that will ensure that the development operates on a sustainable basis.”
This will include the staffing levels required to support this outcome.
Director of Services, Liam Ward, added that to select one post at this time would be premature, but it is something is very much conscious of as it moves the project on.
Under the current regeneration plans, one of the high profile proposals is to open a new two acre park between the back of properties on Upper Main Street and Ard O’Donnell, with access also onto the Church Lane, plus the provision of a new creative enterprise hub as well.
Last year, an allocation of €7.45 million was announced for the Cathedral Quarter Park project.
