A call has been made for local councillors to open negotiations with schools and key employers in Letterkenny in an effort to address the worsening traffic problems within the town.
Letterkenny Aontú representative Mary T Sweeney said a flexi-hour system for morning start times might ease the long delays that are being experienced at peak times each day.
“Navigating that morning traffic around Letterkenny is creating unnecessary daily stress and anxiety for parents, students and workers,” Ms Sweeney said.
“Anything to relieve that stress and anxiety would be a positive start in my opinion. Let’s put our heads together to try and alleviate that build-up of traffic.”
Ms. Sweeney, who will be a candidate in next year’s local elections, said schools could consider starting one hour earlier.
They could also consider running a subsidised 8am breakfast club which would see pupils getting their breakfast before school starts.
It’s a system, she said, works at other schools in Donegal.
“I firmly believe in the interim, while awaiting this new bridge from the Dry Arch to Ballyraine Road, we need a smaller relief bridge over the River Swilly in the vicinity of Leck Road.
“We need a current traffic flow study to identify where the traffic is moving to and from and what direction needs the bridge most.
“I am informed the only current traffic flow study we have is now outdated. A new traffic study needs to be commissioned as soon as possible.”
