A LOCAL councillor believes that Donegal County Council needs to arrange a meeting with the families who lost loved ones in the Creeslough tragedy in relation to the controversial plans to build a new filling station on the site of the explosion in the village.
Speaking at the April meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal Council, Cllr. Tómas Seán Devine maintained that it was “a slap in the face” for family members to read about the planning proposals on social media or through other forms of media rather than being notified through the Council, even with a phone call.
However, Liam Ward, Director of Services, stressed that the Council was fully aware of the sensitive nature of things and the loss of life, but regarding the planning application, he explained that the local authority was expected to make a report to An Bord Pleanála outlining the reasons for the decision made and how it was arrived at.
He rejected any suggestions that it was a “slap in the face” for anyone and said the Council was obliged to do what it had and to follow due process.
He also stated that the Council would never go on social media on such a sensitive manner.
An Bord Pleanála is currently considering an appeal on the granting of planning permission by Donegal County Council in February to Vivo Shell Ltd to construct a new filling station and shop at the site in Creeslough where 10 people lost their lives back in October 2022.
