Illies Golden Gloves fighter Harkin took the 48kgs crown back to Donegal, while St Johnston lad McGinty, who boxes out of the Oakleaf club in Derry, was victorious in the 57kgs decider.

Both young boxer had won their grade at the National Boys Championships at the same venue in mid-April, both continuing their good form with finals wins yesterday at Boxing HQ.

McGinty had to overcome a tough opponent in Anthony McDonagh, from Trinity Boys, in his semi-final, but McGinty just had the edge winning 7-6.

Harkin’s path into yesterday’s finals was a little clearer as he gunned down Ryston puncher Niall Carroll 12-5 on points.

And there could be no doubting the merit of either fighters final win yesterday. The powerful McGinty crashed to a 13-7 win over Patrick O’Donnell to take his second title in as many months back to Donegal.

With the Brandywell-based Oakleaf club, he scored a 10-4 win over Colm Quinn from Castlebar to win the Boy 3 57kgs title, with yesterday’s win over O’Donnell adding to an ever-growing collection.

Young Inishowen man Harkin also stormed to an impressive win yesterday, as he overcame St Anne’s fighter Martin Collins to win 8-5 on points.

There was no joy for Dungloe’s Matthew McCole who was beaten in his quarter-final on Saturday, or Buncrana’s Stephen Bonner, who lost a tense bout 8-6 to St Anne’s boy Frank Carr.
