Busy week of top-class music in Ballybofey

IT’S a busy week at The Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey this week with four gigs coming up over the next seven days.

First up this Saturday night, September 27, is Dolly – a fascinating show capturing the achievements of the incredible singer and film star Dolly Parton.

Singer/Actor Heidi McCaffrey and musical director Richie Hayes (The Voice Of Ireland) recreate the rags to riches story of Dolly Parton with sincerity and conviction, interpreting all the classic songs of a living legend of country music.

Included in the show are all the hit songs that gained her worldwide recognition from her first No1 country hit Joshua to classic tracks such as Jolene, I Will Always Love You and 9 to 5 gaining her worldwide recognition.

The following night Sunday September 28th features Sofia Talvik, a Swedish singer and guitarist with a sound reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake.

Sofia is an accomplished singer songwriter who’s opened for artsits like Suzanne Vega and Maria McKee. She’s played renowned festivals like SXSW and Lollapalooza.

Opening for Sofia on the night will be Antrim perfomer Ciaran Lavery who’s heart on sleeve acoustic pop has been likened to ‘29’ era Ryan Adams.

Next up on Monday, September 29, are Donegal/Dublin outfit Slow Skies – the music project of Dubliner Karen Sheridan and Glenties man Conal Herron.

Their signature sound – ambient folk with sparse production and climactic drums, reminiscent in a way of the XX – has won them many industry admirers.

In the past year they’ve played in New York as part of CMJ Festival and headlined shows in both Dublin and London as well as opening for major artists like James Vincent McMorrow, Cat Power and St Vincent.

The fourth and final concert at The Balor this week takes place on Wednesday September 1st as part of The Bluestacks Festival and promises to be something really special.

Beth Nielsen Chapman is considered by many to be one of the finest singer songwriters of her generation. She’s penned hits for artists such as Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Roberta Flack, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Willie Nelson.

She is joined on stage by Northern Irish artist Ruth Trimble and there will also be a guest appearance from Andrea Begley – winner of The Voice UK 2013.
