TRADITIONAL voting patterns have been thrown to the wind by Saturday polling, according to officials at Donegal’s electoral stations.
Normally those manning the polling stations can predict quiet periods and busy spells. But not today with officials reporting a steady stream of people all morning as opposed to the pre-work, lunch hour and post-work rushes of a weekday vote. Whether that remains the case as Storm Ciara moves in remains to be seen.
Kilmacrennan polling station has been particularly busy since voting opened this morning. At 1pm the turnout there stood at 27 per-cent. It was quieter but still steady at Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny. At 11.30am there the turnout was between 11 and 13 per-cent. And it was a similar picture at Letterkenny’s Trinity Hall where at 11.30am a turnout of 12 to 16 per-cent was recorded across the six booths.
Voting continues until 10pm with the count set to get under way at 9am tomorrow. There are five seats up for grabs and the first resulted is expected around 7pm.
