A year after he was awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City of London, Donegal businessman Tim Kelly is to be afforded another major honour – the Freedom of Donegal.
The Frosses native is chairman of the London based Kelly Group, a major player in the telecommunications business across the UK where it employs over 3,500 people.
At Monday’s meeting of Donegal County Council, the recently elected council Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Harley proposed the civic honour.
“The Kellys have been brilliant. When you think of the amount of work they have provided for people from Donegal and the border counties, I think it’s important that Tim’s contribution is recognised,” Cllr Harley said.
“We have honoured sports people in the past and people from music and entertainment, but it’s also very important to recognise the diaspora and the part they have played in the lives of so many Donegal people.”
For Cllr. Harley, the award presentation which will take place later this year, will be extra special. Like Mr Kelly, the Ballybofey representative is a native of Frosses and his father and mother were Mr. Kelly’s godparents.
