Burt defeat Red Hugh’s to complete U21 double

Burt 5-11 Red Hugh’s 1-7

BURT completed an Under 21 double when they eased past Red Hugh’s in the ‘C’ Football Championship Final at a damp Donegal GAA Centre today.

After winning the Under 21 ‘A’ hurling title last Saturday, Burt produced another fine display in Convoy.

Mel O’Donnell’s men were five points up at half-time and they proved much too strong in the second half as they deservedly lifted the silverware on offer.

Burt got off to a great start when Conor Gartland pointed a free, and they stole possession from the resulting short kick-out and Keith McColgan fired to the net.

McColgan followed up with another score, but Red Hugh’s soon found their feet and Jack Gillespie struck two frees before Cathair Browne punched over.

Placed balls from Gartland and McColgan pushed Burt four ahead and they were strong in midfield.

Gillespie replied with a free and Bryan Irwin thought he was going to score a goal in the 27th minute but Burt corner-back Darren Bradley made a brilliant stop on the line.

That was a big moment as Burt grabbed a goal with their next attack when Conor O’Donnell’s shot squirmed under the body of Thomas McMenamin and the ball rolled into the net.

Gillespie had the final say of the half but his team were 2-4 to 0-5 down at half-time.

Red Hugh’s needed a strong start to the second half but it was Burt, who hit a purple patch.

Michael McElroy finished to the net after Red Hugh’s failed to deal with an effort that dropped short, and Shane McMonagle then powered a shot over the bar.

Darragh McMenamin and Shayne Gallagher swapped scores before Caolan McKinney and McColgan (free) moved Burt into an 11-point lead.

Gillespie kicked a free but the classy McColgan soon cancelled that out.

Red Hugh’s needed a goal and they got one in the 46th minute when James Doherty’s punt forward went all the way to the net.

Oisin Duffy had another goal chance but fired wide.

Burt kept the scoreboard ticking and Gareth McElroy and Gartland were on target before they grabbed their fourth goal in the 56th minute when Michael McElroy fired home.

Gartland concluded the scoring with a fifth goal for Burt, and there was no doubt that they were worthy victors on the day.
