Burial takes place of young woman killed in crash

A SPECIAL burial service took place on Tuesday for Layla Hussein Ali who died in Friday night’s road traffic collision outside Letterkenny.

Originally from Somalia, the 22-year-old died after she was struck by a vehicle on the main Letterkenny to Kilmacrennan road at Illistrin. It is understood the deceased had been living in Donegal since last March.

Family relatives from the UK arrived in the county over the weekend following Friday night’s tragedy.

A local Garda Inspector, who described the road as being “very busy”, confirmed that a family liaison officer was appointed by the gardaí and is currently assisting the family.

Meanwhile, a fresh appeal for information has been made.

Gardaí have asked that any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N56 in the Illistrin area between 6pm and 7.15pm on Friday evening to make this footage available.

The road at Illistrin was closed overnight on Friday as a technical examination of the scene of the collision was carried out by Gardaí.

The road re-opened to traffic shortly after lunchtime on Saturday. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milford Garda station on 074 9153060, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
