Bundoran RNLI ready to drop the ball

Bob - the lifeboat man overboard mannequin tries out the lifeboat soapbox out for size.

WITH less than two weeks to go until the first annual Bundoran Lifeboat Soapbox Race which happens on Bank Holiday Sunday June 3, the crew of Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat are gearing up for a fun day of racing, ball dropping, skateboarding and family entertainment.

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Bundoran based lifeboat, will include the soapbox race, a longboarding skating competition, a ball drop, a barbecue and family fun day featuring a 20 foot Titanic slide, sumo suits and bouncy castles.

Volunteer lifeboat crew member and event organiser Cormac McGurren said: “We’ve been inundated with queries about entering soapboxes into the event and now we’ve added a few extra elements to the day.

“We’re very excited about our ball drop which will see 2000 balls released in one go down the hill after the soapbox race. It’s a simple idea – balls are bought for €5 and the first one through the funnel which we will put at the bottom of the hill wins €1,000 cash.

“Following that we’ll be heading to the Great Northern for a barbecue and family fun day which will see local band Stonefree and other local artists playing plus bouncy castles and games for the kids’

The day will start off at 12pm with Ireland’s first official longboard skate event ever which is being hosted by Huku Boards.

Cathal Sheridan from the Creeslough based company said: “We are delighted to be associated with the Bundoran Lifeboat Soapbox Race and looking forward to a great turnout on the day – anyone wishing to compete in the skate event must enter beforehand by emailing hukuboards@gmail.com – this is the first event of its kind and it will offer a spectacular exhibition from some of Ireland’s top longboard skaters.”

Mindful of the event taking place on a bank holiday Sunday, the Bundoran Lifeboat will of course be on call should it be required.
