THE MAN tragically killed in a hit and run collision outside Bundoran in the early hours of yesterday morning has been named locally at Alan McSherry.
It is appears that the late Mr McSherry was struck by a vehicle at Ardfarn while walking on the Newtown Road on his way home to the townland of Boyney.
The body of the late victim, who was in his late 40s and originally from Liverpool, was discovered one mile from Bundoran close to the cemetery, at 5.1Oam.
The road remained close for a period of time during the day while garda forensic collision investigators carried out an examination of the area.
The body was removed to Sligo General Hospital later in the day where a post mortem examination was due to be carried out.
Mr McSherry was well-known tradesman who moved to Bundoran nearly 20 years ago with his wife Jo and the town’s mayor, Councillor Denise Connolly said the community was in ‘shock’ over the tragic death of such a popular individual.
“Alan was a wonderful man and very well-known to the people in the area as a great community worker and tradesman whom you went to when you needed something done.
“He was a passionate surfer and loved the water and doing anything outdoors. Just last month he completed a massive challenge with two friends cycling the length of the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats,” said Ms Connolly, a close friend of the McSherrys.
The town mayor was speaking yesterday evening after visiting the McSherry home. “I would like to pass on my condolences to his wife and family.
“This is a tragedy not only for his family, but also the person who was involved in the collision and I would ask that person to come forward or anyone with information to contact the gardaí,” said Ms Connolly.
Gardaí are asking anyone who travelled on the Newtown Road near Bundoran on Saturday night or in the early hours of yesterday morning to contact them at Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 9858530.
