BUNCRANA Councillor Rena Donaghey has been elected Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council at their Annual General Meeting in the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny this afternoon.
The Fianna Fail councillor is the third woman to hold the position of Cathoirleach in the 121 year history of the Council.
Cllr Donaghey said to be elected first citizen of the county was a “humbling moment”. She acknowledged it will be a challenging year ahead dealing with the impacts of Covid-19 but among her top priorities are the delivery of high speed broadband in all areas of the county, progress for the A5 road linking Donegal and Dublin and developing tourism. Cllr Donaghey was proposed by Cllr Ciaran Brogan and seconded by Cllr Paul Canning.
Sinn Fein Councillor Noel Jordan was elected Leas Cathaoirleach and was proposed by Councillor Michael MacMahon and seconded by Cllr Gerry McMonagle.
