Buncrana vet to take on Glór Tíre challenge

By Paul McElwee

A Donegal veterinary nurse, who has dedicated his life to helping animals on the farm, will be ‘moo’ving on to his other passion of singing next week by taking part in the new series of TG4’s hit country music show Glór Tíre.

Buncrana’s Jack Larry (23) is appearing on the show’s 21st season, which begins next Tuesday at 9.30pm as one of eight contestants, and one of two from Donegal, battling it out for the coveted title of Ireland’s Glór Tíre Country Music Champion 2025. Presented by Aoife Ní Thuairsig, Jack will have to impress regular judges Jó Ní Chéide of RTÉ Raidio na Gaeltachta’s, singer Caitriona Ní Shuilleabháin and guest judge Eddie Rowley of the Sunday World.

Jack admits to be a little overwhelmed by his upcoming television debut on one of his favourite shows and is proud of being one of two contestants representing Donegal on the show, with the county boasting some of the cream of Country Music talent such as Daniel O’Donnell and Margo.

“It’s a lot to take in. Glór Tíre has always been something I’ve watched on TV every year but never imagined being on it. Glór Tíre is very important because there are very few Country Music programmes on TV. This time of year everyone looks forward to seeing it and watching it.”

Jack’s delight at his appearance has been heightened by the fact that he will be both mentored and performing with one of his key inspirations in his singing journey, Mike Denver.

The pair will duet on a version of the 1988 Buck Owens/Dwight Yoakum hit ‘The Streets of Bakersfield’ whilst Jack will also hope to wow the judges with his own offering ‘I’ll Settle For Old Ireland’.

Talking about singing with his hero, Jack said, “Growing up I’ve always listened to Mike, he’s always on in the house, and I’ve seen him live many times. Having the chance to work with him is a big help. His experience cannot be matched. The most important advice he’s given me has been to relax and enjoy it all, and that’s the best advice he could give.”

The respect is mutual, with Denver is full of praise for Jack and his approach to Country Music. “Jack brings it back to that old Country style and sound,” he says. “He’s a great voice.”

Glór Tíre airs next Tuesday (March 4) at 7.30pm on TG4
