Buncrana bathing water among worst in country

LADY’S Bay in Buncrana is among one of the three worst quality bathing waters in the country according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual report for 2022 published recently.

The report shows that of the 148 identified bathing waters assessed country-wide, 144 (97 per cent) met or exceeded the minimum required standard of sufficient.

Sixteen of Donegal’s bathing waters achieved an ‘excellent’ rating and four were ‘good’.

However, Buncrana was among the three classified as ‘poor’ in 2022 alongside Balbriggan Front Strand Beach in Dublin and Tra na mBan in An Spideal.

Uisce Éireann have begun a major upgrade of the wastewater treatment system in Buncrana which it is hoped will improve the water quality when completed.

The four bathing areas rated ‘good’ as opposed to ‘excellent’ are Port Arthur, Rathmullan, Pornablagh and Lisfannon.
