Brothers seriously injured in workplace accident

TWO Gortahork brothers were seriously injured in a workplace accident in Burtonport on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3.30pm on the site of the new €4 million Burtonport Harbour Redevelopment project. It is understood both men fell from a height.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the brothers were taken by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital. One was later removed to Beaumont Hospital, arriving just after 11pm on Wednesday night. His condition is critical but stable. The second man had an operation in Letterkenny yesterday, Thursday.

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are carrying out investigations into the sequence of events leading up the incident.

Fr Seán Ó Gallchóir, Parish Priest in Gortahork, held a vigil Mass for the brothers in Christ the King Church on Thursday evening.

“The men are very well known and respected members of the local community and the Church was full on Thursday night. We can only hope and pray that the two boys come through this but they face a tough journey ahead,” one local said.

Work on the major regeneration project for Burtonport started in the New year with initial demolition works commencing two weeks ago.

Two new buildings, including a new ferry terminal building, will be constructed to create a modern sustainable harbour for the village and surrounding islands. The buildings will accommodate Donegal County Council office accommodation, meeting room, public facilities, ferry offices, waiting area and tourist desk facility and a retail unit building containing a number of small mixed use retail units.
