Broadband for 18 Donegal schools

A FURTHER 18 schools in Donegal are to be added to a new high-speed broadband network, it was confirmed this week.

Communications company, HEAnet have said it is on track to meet the Government commitment to provide post-primary schools in 14 county areas with 100Mb/s broadband by end of October 2012. Eight schools in Donegal are on network already.

The programme is being sponsored by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) and the Department of Education and Skills (DES) with the support of National Development Plan (NDP), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and EUStructural Fund funding programmes.

A spokesperson for HEAnet told the Donegal News that the 18 schools in Donegal are to be connected in the current batch of upgrades, which once complete will mean that all Post-Primary schools in Donegal will have a 100 Mbit/s connection.

The schools in question are: Scoil Mhuire Secondary School, Buncrana; Crana College, Buncrana; Carrick Vocational School, Carrick; Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town; Errigal College, Letterkenny; Mulroy College, Milford; Deele College, Raphoe; Finn Valley College, Stranorlar; St Catherine’s Vocational, Killybegs; Gairm Scoil Chú Uladh Béal an Átha Móir; Magh Ene College, Bundoran; Moville Community College, Moville; Gaelcholaiste Chineál Eoghain Muileann Thulaigh Gharbháin, Bun Chranncha; St Columba’s Comprehensive School, Glenties; The Royal and Prior School, Raphoe; Rosses CS, Dungloe; Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair; Coláiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon.

In addition to broadband connectivity, HEAnet provides newly connected schools with a portfolio of associated services including a managed school router, centralised content filtering, firewall, anti-virus, and associated services.

The following schools are already connected: Loreto Convent, Letterkenny; Carndonagh Community School; St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny; St Columba’s College, Stranorlar; Loreto Community School Milford; Pobalscoil Chloich Cheannfhaola, An Fálcarrach; Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada, Árainn Mhór; Coláiste Phobail Cholmcille, Oileán Thoraí.
