Six days into his charity Drive of Ireland, Brian McDaid hit the worst of the week’s weather yesterday afternoon with heavy fog causing dangerous driving conditions along the East coast.

Brian was heading northwards on the M1 motorway when dense pockets of fog descended on the route.

“It was scary enough to be honest with you,” Brian said yesterday.

“The traffic was moving along nicely but then all of a sudden you could see drivers trying to get slowed down because of the sudden fog.

“Up until then, the weather had been grand. But the fog is never nice to drive in.”

Brian had just crossed the border and was heading towards Newry when he gave his latest update from his charity drive which is raising funds for

. His Drive of Ireland Idonate page is just short of passing €10,000.

“I’ve been saying it all along, but the support I’ve got from people has been amazing,” he said.

“There are so many people who have given money unanimously which is just brilliant.

“To see the money coming in steady since we got the page up and running has been so inspiring.”

Having made his way down the West coast on Thursday, reaching Co. Kerry later that evening, Brian has since journeyed through Cork and Waterford and up through Wicklow before spending Saturday night in Dublin.

He’s made new friends along the way, and met loads of people from home, including fellow Donegal photographer Eoin McGarvey in Galway.

His night in Dublin allowed him to catch up with his youngest son Niall who lives in the capital, and some of his own and his wife Eileen’s relatives.

Brian was hoping to reach the north coast past Belfast last evening, and all going well, he might well be back in Letterkenny this evening – just less than a week after he and his trusty car ‘Betsy’ left the Donegal Hospice last Tuesday morning.
