BRETT McGinty goes in search of his sixth Irish title on Friday night when he takes on Kevin Kehoe of Marble City in the 70kgs final at the National Senior Cadet Championships.
The St Johnston man has the bit between the teeth again having been controversially pipped to a Youth 1 title by Christopher O’Reilly. There’ll be no rematch after O’Reilly lost out to Kehoe in his semi final.
McGinty overcame Jimmy O’Reilly of Portlaoise in his semi. The Oakleaf ABC man was on form again and blasted his way to a win by unanimous decision victory.
After overcoming Leon Gallagher (Finn Valley) last weekend in a battle of European bronze medalists, McGinty was buoyant. He triumphed comfortably against O’Reilly in another fine display of the weapons.
Now he faces tricky southpaw Kehoe in the final with the title number six on the line.
Callum Toland, McGinty’s cousin, left nothing behind home but he suffered a defeat to Michael Avetisian (Mulhuddart) in the 57kgs semi-final after having wins over Brandon Maguire (St David’s, Naas) and Patrick McGlinchey (Mourne GG) last weekend.
Toland has had a fine season and will take nothing but encouragement from his first couple of ventures to the National Stadium.
Dungloe’s Matthew McCole was beaten in the 54kgs semi by Andy McDonagh (St Paul’s, Waterford).
The IABA are using the National Senior Cadet Championships as part of their selection process for the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia in October/November.
European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships
LABHAOISE Clarke suffered the agony of having to withdraw from the Irish squad for the European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships after sustaining a groin injury last week.
In the final days of a training camp in Offaly the Carndonagh bantamweight picked up the injury which prevented her from traveling to Italy with the team. Clarke had been selected for the 54kgs division after defeating Clondard’s Sophie Tierney at the National Stadium to win the Cadets title.
Open air show
THE Donegal Boxing Board is to hold an open air show in Clonmany on Friday August 8th as part of the Clonmany festival. Dungloe’s Jim McCole is busy compiling the matchups for the event and expects to have the lineup completed by the end of this week. Boxing on the day gets underway at 2pm.
