The plan provides for the replacement of the existing Lifford, Stranorlar and Ramelton facilities and the refurbishment or extension of a number of others around the county.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor, Patrick McGowan, has pointed out that there was no mention of the closures in press released distributed today by Fine Gael Minister, Joe McHugh.

In his statement, Minister McHugh said: “Today’s announcement of €29.14 million to be invested in Donegal is one of the most comprehensive programmes of investment in public nursing home facilities in the history of the State and is extremely positive for Donegal.
“Letterkenny Community Nursing Unit is to receive €300,000 through the plan, as well as an additional €22.75M through public private partnerships (PPP) or alternative funding arrangements to be considered.

“The residential care centres included in the Capital Plan 2016-202 are: Carndonagh Community Hospital €2.6M; Buncrana Community Nursing Unit, €2.97M; Killybegs, €440,000; Falcarragh Community Hospital €2.82 M; Dungloe Community Hospital €2.61M; Ballyshannon to receive €17.4M.”

There is no timeline for the closures, however, the new Letterkenny facility is due to open in 2021.
