Brave Ramelton woman presents local playgroup with impressive €24,900

By Dionne Meehan

RAMELTON Community Playgroup has been presented with an amazing €24,900, raised through dedicated fundraising efforts to support their upcoming move to a new location.

Local woman, Sara Nairn, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, made it her mission to spread awareness while raising vital funds for her community.

Originally from Woodlands, Sara was given a shock breast cancer diagnosis 34 weeks into her pregnancy.

Just two weeks later, she welcomed her beautiful baby boy, Finn, who has been thriving ever since.

Determined to turn her diagnosis into something positive, the mother of two used her experience to raise awareness among young people while also gathering much-needed funds for Ramelton Community Playgroup, where her daughter attends.

But Sara didn’t raise the staggering €24,900 alone. She achieved it with a bit of help from the pupils at Drumfad National School in Kerrykeel, where she is the principal.

Inspired by her fundraising efforts and the ripple effect it created, the children organised their own coffee morning to raise funds for the community playgroup.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Sara said she was touched when her students decided to get involved.

“That is the generosity of the community around us,” she said.

“It is everyone else’s generosity that made the fundraiser such a massive success.

“We are so grateful for the support.”

For over 40 years, the playgroup has been the heart of the local community.

With three current staff members having worked there for over two decades, many generations of children have grown and thrived under their dedicated care.

Now witnessing that care come full circle, Playgroup Manager, Norma Wilson said the outpouring of support from the community has been “truly overwhelming”.

“We are deeply grateful to the community, parents and local businesses for the incredible support we’ve received throughout the years,” she said.

Ms Wilson offered a heartfelt thank you to Sara and her family for the tremendous effort put into the recent fundraiser and extended her best wishes for the future.

Although the transition to their new location is still a “work in progress”, fundraising efforts are continuing in the town this Saturday, as residents get ready to shimmy the night away, all while raising much-needed funds!

The brainchild of local residents celebrating recent milestone birthdays, the fundraising event will take partygoers on a nostalgic journey through the 60s, 70s, and 80s as disco fever lights up the Town Hall from 9pm on Saturday, May 3.

So grab your gladrags and show your support. There is even a prize for the best fancy dress on the night!

Tickets for the event are €10 and can be purchased from Ramelton Community Playgroup, Kevin McFadden’s Shop or at the door on the night.

All welcome to come along on the night.
