Boyce finishes 19th in Berlin

Brendan Boyce

BRENDAN Boyce gave it his all in the 50km Race Walk at the European Athletic Championships in Berlin this morning, but faded in the final ten kilometres to finish in 19th position.

The Milford man started the race impressively and was only two seconds off the lead after 12 kilometres.

He stuck with the leaders well and was sixth after 32km, but struggled to keep pace in the searing heat after that and eventually came home in a time of 4:02:14.

Boyce’s preparations for the championships were far from ideal as he suffered a stress reaction of the Tibia back in May.

The 31-year-old was unable to train properly, and had very little road work done before the race. He managed to stay fit by doing three-and-a-half hour sessions on the cross-trainer, while he also taught himself how to swim.

He was unsure of how his leg would hold up, but battled well to finish the race in the baking hot conditions.
