Boyce finishes 10th in Olympics 50km Race Walk

BRENDAN Boyce delivered a magnificent performance as he finished in tenth position in the 50km Race Walk at the Olympics today.

Boyce battled the searing heat in Sapporo, Japan and finished in a time of 3:53.40.

The race was won by Dawid Tomala from Poland in 3:50.08, while Jonathan Hilbert (Germany) was second in 3:50:44, and Evan Dunfee (Canada) finished strongly to take third in 3:50.59.

Boyce, who represents Finn Valley AC, impressed during the first 25 kilometres. At the half-way stage, he was 20th but in the lead pack, with 22 men separated by five seconds.

The race started to open up after that and Boyce was in 11th place after 40 kilometres. The Milford man dropped down to 12th but showed grit and determination to come back and finish in tenth position, and he was less than three minutes off a medal.

It was Boyce’s best display at the Olympics after he finished 29th in London in 2012, and 19th in Rio four years later.
