Boy-racers cause Christmas chaos for gardai

GARDA resources in the Letterkenny/Milford District were severely compromised on Christmas Day by the antics of a number of so-called ‘boy-racers’ who caused considerable disturbance on the main Letterkenny to Churchill Road.

Pictured are the Vauxhall Omega seized by gardai and now at Milford Garda station and a shoe left behind by the car’s driver or passenger.

Posting on facebook, An Garda Siochana Donegal said the “idiotic” behaviour of a minority of drivers in the district over the Christmas period impacted on their ability to deal with other emergencies.

They also confirmed that they seized a vehicle involved in dangerous driving activity at the Foxhall junction in Glenswilly after the driver and his passenger fled on arrival of gardai, leaving behind their car and a shoe.

The post from An Garda Siochana Donegal read: “Christmas Day is meant to be full of joy and peace but unfortunately Gardai in Donegal got no peace yesterday as resources were stretched throughout the day due to idiotic boy racer activity. This means slower response times when we were needed elsewhere.

“It’s time mums and dads out there stepped up and asked where their little Johnny (or Jenny) is going to when he/she rolls out the driveway in their rear wheel drive rust bucket!

“Take Churchill to Letterkenny yesterday evening for example, approx 15-20 cars completely blocked the Glenswilly junction so they could spin their toys around in a circle! Exciting stuff!!

“Thank you to the concerned people in Churchill/Newmills area for their phone calls and updates. One of the callers, an elderly lady was in tears to our control room as she was so scared.

“Finally, the driver of the scrap heap below didn’t fancy hanging around when he spotted the unmarked Garda car approaching him! The driver (Great driving by the way buddy) nor his passenger hung around as they made across the fields. As well as losing his Omega the driver lost his shoe and a bit more on the barbed wire!

“It’s still at the scene if you want to return for it and if you want to get the car back, contact Milford Garda Station !
