TWO Donegal boxers have been included on the Irish squad for the 2013 European Junior Championships in Russia next month.
St Johnston’s Brett McGinty, above left, who boxes out of Derry’s Oakleaf ABC, is joined on the eleven-man squad by Carndonagh’s Liam Callaghan.
While it will be a first continental venture for Callaghan, who will compete at 46kgs, McGinty has previous.
A five-time Irish champion, McGinty won a bronze medal at the 2012 European Schoolboy Championships.
This year, he returns to the same Russian city, Anapa, has he won bronze there.
He sealed bronze following a 19-12 win over Armenia’s Gurgen Madoyan, having previously scored a 16-7 win over Israeli Michael Katz.
His fifth Irish title was won in March when he defeated Michael McDonagh from Ennis.
Both McGinty and Callaghan won box-offs to guarantee selection for the Championships.
Former European Schoolboy champions John Joyce and Oliver McCarthy have been named in the team, along with AIBA 2013 World Junior bronze medalist Sean Conroy.
Irish coach Billy McClean said that the squad would travel to Russia on October 29th and are aiming to have a training camp with the host nation.
“It wouldn’t be an experienced a team as the team that went to the World Championships. We’re giving our boxers the opportunity to gain experience at the top level internationally, “ he said.
Boxing begins in Anapa on November 9th.
