Bowman and Barr tops in Lough Fern

The Milford & District Fly Angling Club held the Annual Donegal Pairs Open Fly Angling Competition on Lough Fern last Saturday the 14th of September.

Another great turnout of 58 anglers from all over Ulster, Mayo and Scotland made the annual pilgrimage to sweet Lough Fern to compete for this prestigious title.
Conditions were reasonable and all the teams boated fish.

Under the Milford Clubs’ strict conservation policy,each team could only weigh-in 4 Wild Brown Trout over 11inches.

First Prize went to Andrew Bowman and Willie Barr with a combined total weight of 4.251 pounds. Second Prize was taken by Declan Bonner and John Bonner with a combined total weight of 4.118 pounds. Third Prize went to Patrick Gallagher and John O’Donnell with a combined total weight of 2.901 pounds. Fourth Prize: Patrick Schoales and John Boyle with a combined total weight of 2.513 pounds.

Bill McGarvey and Columba O’Donnell came in a very close fifth place with a combined total weight of 2.482 pounds. Milford Club member, Emmett McWilliams landed the heaviest fish of the day weighing in at 2.152 pounds.

The Milford Club were also delighted to have local man and the Lord Mayor of Donegal, Ian Mc Garvey present the prizes along with Club President, Hugo Duggan.
The Club would like to thank all the anglers who took part and helped make this such a successfull event.

The Club would also like to thank all the people who made their boats available for the visiting anglers and in particular, the Letterkenny & District Angling Club who made their boats available once again.

A massive word of thanks must also go to the Management and staff of the Travellers Inn , Milford for the use of the premises for the Weigh -In and for the great meal and refreshments once again.

Loughanure Angling Club

The Loughanure Angling Club held their last junior competiton for 2013 on Sunday the 8th September, 12 anglers attended with some good trout coming in. The results were as follows:

5th Aiden Elliott
The event was sponsored by Charlie Bonner in Dungloe, Doalty Boyle and Jim Cook. The committee would like to thank all the boatmen and anlgers for an enjoyable afternoon.

The Loughanure Angling Club also held a members competition on Loughanure Lake last Sunday.
Despite the poor weather conditions, a good day was enjoyed by all.

Salmon Angling

Lindsey Clarke from the IFI Office in Glenties reports some better catches from the Owenea Salmon Fishery for last week.

Last week was wetter and the river received some nice water levels over the week.
35 visiting rods fished for the week. There were good numbers of salmon caught and given here are some of the catches. I am still awaiting details of catches from the weekend although there would have been little caught on Sunday.

On Monday, Otmar Butz recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. John Northridge reported a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5. Mick Kolbohm logged 3 grilse caught on a fly from beat 5.

The fish weighed 2.5, 3.5 & 6.5lb with smaller and larger of these released and Beano accounted for a 4.5lb grilse caught from beat 7 on a spinner.

On Wednesday, Sean Campbell recorded a 9lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 6 and Mick Kolbohm logged a 4lb grilse caught and released on a fly from beat 5.

On Thursday, Sean Campbell recorded a grilse of 2.5lb caught and released on a spinner from beat 6. Jim McLean logged a 5.5lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8 and Columba Campbell registered a 4lb grilse caught on a worm from beat 6.
