Last Saturday’s match against Tyrone was a disappointing end to a disappointing campaign.
It was always likely to be a tough test but we were hoping that Donegal could make it into a really tasty derby affair.
However, they played second fiddle from the first minute and Tyrone went on to win quite well if we are honest.
The loss of Conor O’Donnell before the match was a blow and when you looked through both squads, we just couldn’t match our neighbours for quality.
In fairness to the team, they did rally in the first half and if they could have kept it to two or three points at half-time, you never know how things would have played out.
Five in arrears at the break was a long way back and we really needed a fast start to the second half.
It never happened and Tyrone were able to control the play, knowing that as long as they didn’t concede a goal that they would win, and so it played out.
It was a tough defeat on the players and management. They have had a difficult season when things just never quite came together.
Aidan O’Rourke and Paddy Bradley took on the manager’s job when Paddy Carr stepped away, and it would have been easy for them to wash their hands of Donegal football at the time.
I know a lot of the players well, and I know the effort and commitment they put in. They didn’t get the rewards this year but I hope they don’t lose heart.
