‘Blood bikes’ active over the Christmas period

A RECENTLY formed voluntary motorbike service was on call around the clock for seven days over the Christmas period, providing the emergency transport of medical items in Donegal.

Launched back in September, Blood Bike North West (BBNW) volunteer riders carried out two runs over the festive season for both Letterkenny and Sligo General Hospitals.

On New Year’s Day, blood samples were transported from Letterkenny General to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.

Meanwhile, on Friday, January 3, a rider undertook an emergency run with a consignment of breast milk from the Human Milk Bank in Irvinestown, County Fermanagh, to the Neonatal Unit in Sligo General Hospital.

The drive to establish the BBNW service has been lead by Mr Bernard McDyre who was elected as chairman.

It is an innovative scheme which sees volunteers providing a free out-of-hours bike service to the HSE in the North West and is an extension of already successfully established blood bike services in the West and East of the country.

Mr McDyre told the Donegal News this week: “We are grateful of the support that we have received throughout Donegal since we were launched back in September and we look forward to expanding the service in 2014.”

If there are any motorcyclist who would like to become involved with BBNW, log on to www.bloodbikenorthwest.ie for contact details.
