Blaney apologises for attendance at golf event

DONEGAL Senator Niall Blaney has apologised for his attendance at a golf function in a hotel just a day after the government announced new lockdown measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary has already resigned for breaching the public health guidelines.

More than 80 people, including the Agriculture Minister, senators and TDs attended the Oireachtas Golf Society event to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The event was held at a function room at the Station House Hotel, Clifden, Co Galway even though public health advice clearly states “no formal or informal events or parties should be organised in these premises”.

Admitting his attendance, Senator Niall Blaney said, “Earlier in the week I attended the Oireachtas golf outing. Given the updated public health advice I should not have attended the dinner.

“I am sincerely sorry for this error in judgement and apologise unreservedly.

“I am very conscious of the enormous effort by people to battle this virus and keep everyone safe. My attendance was therefore wrong and I apologise.”
