A national snow and ice warning came into effect this morning with temperatures reaching close to freezing in Donegal.
Icy roads were reported across the county, particularly in Letterkenny. Black ice was reported in areas of Manorcunningham and on the N13 Letterkenny/Derry road as well as on roads leading into Buncrana.
Met Eireann said scattered snow showers are to be expected over the day, with most frequent in Ulster and Connaught as a ‘polar low’ sweeps over the country.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed and drive carefully over the weekend.
Snow first appeared in Donegal earlier in the week. Ardara, Glenties and Mount Errigal all received a dusting of white snow, the first of the season.
Friday will be bitterly cold and blustery with some spells of sunshine. Frost is expected to set in over night and will become ‘severe’. Temperatures are predicted to rise again on Sunday with less wind and rain.
A further yellow weather warning was issued for coastal areas, with Met Eireann reminding the public to remain safe when visiting coastal areas.
“West to North West winds will reach a force six or higer during today on all Irish coastal waters.” they said.
