The hard work is paying off for Letterkenny IT as they are now through to the last four of the Sigerson Cup.
LYIT were granted the right to play in the top competition after winning the Trench Cup last season.
Things weren’t looking great as they lost all their three games in the league, but come the championship with their full squad available, they have really thrived.
Team captain Darragh Black played a big part in their quarter-final win over IT Sligo and he is looking forward to their semi-final meeting with IT Carlow this evening at 7pm in Inniskeen.
“It feels nice to be through to the next round,” said the Milford clubman.
“If you had offered me that in September, I would have bitten the hand off you.
“We have been training twice a week and the boys have put in a big effort to get here.
“We have a big game on Wednesday but we will give it our all and see how it goes.”
Black helped himself to three points and was a constant thorn for the Sligo defence along with his inside partner Eoghan McGettigan.
“The space was there and we got good ball.
“Eoghan is a class act and he proved that this year in the senior championship.
“We made space for each other and if one won the ball, the other was coming off on the loop.
“It worked well but you have to give credit to the boys at the back because they just worked and worked and worked, and all we had to do is chip in and put the ball over the bar.”
Black admits that when he looked into going to LYIT, it wasn’t for football reasons, but they are now through to the last four of the Sigerson Cup while big-hitters like UCC, Jordanstown, and St Mary’s are eliminated.
“It’s brilliant to be at this stage. We were just saying last night when you applied on the CAO for college a few years ago you wouldn’t have thought you’d be playing Sigerson football with the IT.
“You’d probably have thought you’d miss the boat if you picked a course with LYIT.
“But three years ago we started a journey and most of these boys have been part of it the whole way.
“In the first year we lost a Trench semi-final, last year we won the Trench and now this year we’re showing that we can compete with the top colleges with mainly just a group of Donegal lads.”
