Big ‘Jayo’ raids the Orchard

DONEGAL’S Jason McGee was delighted to come out on the right side of a big battle with Armagh at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds.

Jim McGuinness’s side travelled to Armagh on Sunday as the only team yet to be defeated in Division 1 and it was a record that they were able to maintain against their Ulster rivals.

McGee produced a man of the match display in Sunday’s encounter and he expressed that the start to the league that they’ve made is brilliant for the team.

“Four wins from four at the start of the league, it’s nice to start it well. For this time of the year, we’ve a lot of strong players, a lot of bodies on the pitch and a good bill of health at the minute.

“It’s good that we have that flexibility now to go and really target the league this year as opposed to other years when we didn’t have that.”

The reigning Ulster Champions looked in a strong position heading down the home stretch however, the decision from Brendan Cawley to award the hosts a late penalty would have made Donegal sweat a little.

However, Gavin Mulreany was on-hand to deny Oisin Conaty from the spot, with the Donegal defenders rushing in to clear the rebound, showing desire that McGee loved to see.

“It was a fantastic save from Gavin (Mulreany). Gavin’s been fantastic for her since the start of the year and then the hunger and desire of the boys to get in after the rebound, it was a pleasure to see.”

Like a lot of modern inter-county games, the midfield battle was fierce on Sunday afternoon in Armagh.

Speaking after the game, the Falcarragh man discussed that it was an area that they managed to get a hold of in Act Two which helped them to get over the line.

“It was certainly a battle. In the first half, Armagh probably got a few over us in the aerial exchanges and it’s probably something that we pride ourselves on, having a lot of big men around the middle.

“Thankfully we were able to rectify that in the second half, we got to grips with the middle and the game went from there.”
