Ben Sweeney’s celebrates 30 years in Dungloe

BEN Sweeney’s Electrical is proudly celebrating 30 years in business in Dungloe, marking three decades of serving the local community from its base in the SuperValu Shopping Centre.

The Dungloe store was opened following a conversation between Ben Sweeney and Dermot Rainey of Rainey Estate Agents, shortly after the SuperValu Shopping Centre came to Dungloe.  Dermot encouraged Ben to consider Dungloe as a location, recognising it as a thriving town with strong commercial potential. The move proved to be a successful one, with Ben Sweeney Electrical already having a large and loyal customer base throughout the area, including Arranmore Island and across the Rosses.

Only a few months after opening, discussions among local business owners highlighted the need for a credit union in Dungloe. A meeting was arranged with representatives from the Letterkenny Credit Union, which ultimately led to the establishment of Dungloe Credit Union — an organisation that has since gone from strength to strength and continues to play a vital role in the town.

Around 15 years ago, Ben Sweeney Electrical joined Euronics, Europe’s largest electrical retail group. This partnership allows the business to combine strong local service with the buying power of a major retail group, giving customers access to all leading appliance brands, competitive pricing, and an extensive range of home appliances, TVs and IT products. Today, Euronics has over 60 member stores across Ireland, supporting independent Irish retailers nationwide.

In keeping with its commitment to innovation and customer convenience, Ben Sweeney’s has also recently launched a new website, www.bensweeney.ie, allowing customers to browse and shop 24/7, whether in-store or online.

The business is also proud to be county Donegal’s number one Calor Gas retailer, supplying gas cookers, hobs, regulators, hoses, camping stoves and gas refills to homes and businesses throughout the county.

Ben Sweeney’s has actively participated in wider community initiatives in Dungloe, including involvement in the Dungloe Gaeltacht Service Town language initiative, which encourages bilingual signage and promotes the use of Irish in everyday business across the town and the Rosses. In 2023, Ben Sweeney’s Dungloe was recognised nationally with a GRADAIM Gnó na hÉireann (Business Award) from Glór na nGael, acknowledging its participation in initiatives that promote the Irish language in business.

The company would also like to acknowledge and thank our staff member James and also Gráinne and her colleagues at An Clochán Liath – Baile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta (BSGCL) for their encouragement, guidance and ongoing support in promoting the Irish language in business as part of this wider community initiative.

While celebrating 30 years in Dungloe, the company is also mindful of its wider Donegal roots, with the Letterkenny store now established for over 50 years, reflecting a long-standing commitment to local service, trust and community connection.

As Ben Sweeney’s marks this milestone, the family would like to thank all past and present staff, as well as the customers and communities who have supported the business over the years.
