Beloved Ramelton musician to be remembered on his second anniversary

THE heartbroken family of talented Ramelton musician Paul Mooney, who lost his life in a collision just days before Christmas in 2023, are preparing to mark the second anniversary of his death.

Mr Mooney (30), late of Glen Lower, died in a two-car collision on the N14 Letterkenny to Lifford road at Carrickballydoey on December 18. Paul’s partner, Nicolle, and the driver of the other vehicle were injured in the crash.

Mr Mooney’s second anniversary Mass will take place in St Mary’s Church, Ramelton, on Sunday, December 14 at 11am.

Since his tragic death, Mr Mooney’s family have been keeping his memory alive, while also celebrating his legacy.

“Keeping his memory alive is my one wish,” said Paul’s father, Morgan Mooney.

“Paul loved Christmas, which makes it all the harder.”

Mr Mooney was a treasured member of Boy M5 alongside his best friend, Kyle O’Neill. The indie pop-rock band are known for their emotive sound and powerful performances. Poignantly, last year’s Party in the Park in Letterkenny celebrated the much missed and talented musician with the main stage poignantly renamed ‘The Paul Mooney Stage’. It was funded by donations of €7,000, in lieu of flowers following his death. A donation was also made to the Loft Youth Project, Donegal Youth Service, where Mr Mooney was supported during his formative years.

The family have praised their friends and community for their “extraordinary acts of kindness”, which helped them navigate the enormity of their loss and have continued to since. “I feel this anniversary, believe it or not, is actually harder than last year,” said Mr Mooney.

Paul is survived by his parents, Morgan and Gwen, his partner Nicolle, sisters Maeve and Julianne and wide family circle.
