Bed and breakfast go-ahead for former Dungloe bank

by Louise Doyle

THE former Bank of Ireland building in Dungloe is set to be turned into a bed and breakfast.

Applicant Eighter Properties Ltd lodged plans with Donegal County Council in July of this year seeking permission for the change of use of a bank/financial institution to a bed and breakfast and café.

Plans lodged comprised the change of use use of bank/financial institution at a section of the ground floor level to a café, as well as a bed and breakfast at ground, first, and second floors.

Proposals also included connections to all existing services.

The former Bank of Ireland on the town’s Main Street was one of five branches among 88 locations that were cut from the bank’s national network in 2021.

Donegal County Council has granted the planning permission, with nine conditions.

These include that the use of the building permitted for the purposes of a bed and breakfast facility is not to be used for independent short or long term letting, save as otherwise permitted under a separate grant of planning permission.

In order to protect the amenities of the area, Donegal County Council has also stipulated that detailed proposals providing for a cycle parking facility to County Development Plan 2024-2030 standards to the rear of the building shall be provided.

A further condition of the planning permission states that no alterations shall be carried out to the front or side elevations or the front wall and associated railings without the prior consent in writing from the Planning Authority.
