DONEGAL Minor manager Shaun Paul Barrett says his panel are cautious ahead of their championship opener against Antrim this Sunday in Corrigan Park.

Barrett’s team are Ulster Minor League champions and start the game as favourites, but minor football does not always follow form.

Last week, Tyrone were expected to have too much for Derry, but they were beaten and their season came to a premature ending.

Donegal should win this week but it will be a difficult assignment in Belfast.

“I wouldn’t view it as a potential ambush, but we are cautious of what is ahead,” said Barrett.

“Antrim are a good side, and you don’t get anything easy in the championship.

“We won the Ulster Minor League title, but Antrim won the Shield and they beat Tyrone this year as well.

“They are a good side, and we will have to be at our best to get through to the semi-finals.”

Donegal lost out to Mayo in a challenge game last week, but they were short a number of regulars.

One player who is expected to miss out is Naomh Conaill forward Eoghan McGettigan who broke his toe last week.

“We played a challenge game last week, and six or seven lads that would be pushing hard for starting spots weren’t available.

“The Minor League semi-finals and final were on over the last two weeks and a couple of lads picked up injuries from that.

“We’re trying to nurse a few fellas along this week and we will be monitoring their progress.

“We might have to wait until Sunday and do a late fitness test to see if some lads are going to make it.”
