Balor Multisport Race: New endurance race to come to Donegal

The inaugural Balor Multisport Race is set to take place over the weekend of April 11-13 in the stunning northwest of Donegal. The race will challenge competitors to complete a 225-km loop combining running, cycling and kayaking, making it one of the most thrilling endurance events in Ireland.

Organised by Creeslough native and experienced adventure racer Shaun Stewart, the Balor Multisport Race aims to establish Donegal as a prime destination for world-class endurance racing.

Having competed across the globe, Shaun is bringing his passion and expertise to his home turf, offering athletes an opportunity to test their limits in one of Ireland’s most picturesque regions.

“The course has a great mix of terrain, from sand dunes and beaches to Errigal Mountain, kayaking on Dunlewey lake, and then some epic cycling roads along the coast,” says Stewart.

The race is based in Dunfanaghy and will take participants through six gruelling stages on a marked course, showcasing some of Donegal’s most iconic landscapes, including Bloody Foreland, Errigal Mountain, Dunlewey Lake, Knockalla and Fanad, Atlantic Drive and the old Muckish railway.

Competitors will have 22 hours to complete the six stages, which includes 47 kilometres of running over varied terrain, 167 kilometres of road cycling and 11 kilometres of flat-water kayaking.

“The race is set up to challenge all levels of racer, the fastest will finish in around 11 hours, but the nature of the race means some will be out there for 20-22 hours testing themselves against the course and the elements.”

The race is open to solo competitors or teams of 2-3 participants, allowing athletes to either take on the full course individually or split the stages among teammates.

“I felt it was important to have the team option to encourage newcomers into the sport and add a fun, collaborative element to the challenge,” adds Stewart.

Registration for the Balor Multisport Race is now open, and athletes are encouraged to sign up early and set their sights on the start line on April 12th. For more information, sponsorship opportunities, or to register, visit www.multisportireland.ie or contact Shaun at info@multisportireland.ie.
