Ballyshannon welcomes home Olympic hero in spectacular style

By Tara McCormack

BALLYSHANNON pulled out all the stops in a vibrant homecoming for Olympic Games Bronze Medallist Mona McSharry, celebrating her incredible achievement in the Women’s 100m breaststroke.

The weeks and hours of meticulous planning were evident in the stunning display that adorned the town, with Olympic and Irish flags and banners draped from every corner.

Having weathered a summer of rain and storms, the town was blessed with a burst of sunshine throughout the evening.

The festive atmosphere was palpable as a host of special guests, including local dignitaries, fellow athletes, and proud community members, gathered at the Market Yard in Ballyshannon town centre.

The area was transformed into a lively festival site, complete with a large stage and screen.

The event kicked off with the talented musicians from the CCE Phil Rooney Branch, who set the tone with fabulous renditions of traditional jigs and reels, warming up the eager crowd.

The celebration continued with mesmerising performances by the Domican Academy of Irish Dance, whose group, double, and single routines captivated and entertained everyone present.

One of the highlights of the day was the victory parade, which was led by the St. Catherine’s Marching Band from Killybegs.

As the parade made its way through the streets, Mona proudly draped an Ireland flag over her shoulders and waved to the crowd from her arrival vehicle.

The pride of Ballyshannon, the Marlins Swimming Club, marched ahead of her, holding their banners high.
RTÉ Sport’s commentator Marty Morrissey took the stage as the evening’s host, leading the crowd in honouring McSharry’s accomplishments.

He was introduced by Barry O’Neill, who had served as the preliminary MC before handing over the reins.

The event featured interviews with Donegal County Council chairperson Cllr Niamh Kennedy, Director of Services Liam Ward, and representatives from Swim Ireland, all of whom praised McSharry’s dedication and success.

A special welcome was extended to former Olympic swimmer and RTÉ swim analyst Andrew Bree, who is also a two-time Olympian.

In her heartfelt speech, McSharry expressed her deep connection to Ballyshannon, saying: “I’m so lucky, I have two towns that I can call home,” as she thanked the crowd for the incredible turnout.

“It’s great to be back and to get such a great warm welcome, it’s just unbelievable,” she added.

Reflecting on her experience at the Paris Olympics, the Sligo native shared her emotions, stating: “I was really excited and a little bit nervous, of course.

“Excited to get over there for something that I had been basically preparing for my whole career. Just getting excited to put all the hard work to show.”
