The award-winning Errigal Hostel in Dunlewey.
AN Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel Association, has announced that Errigal Hostel in Dunlewey has been awarded EU ECO Flower Label.
The ECO Flower Label is an environmental accreditation recognised throughout Europe for its commitment to sustainable tourism and protection of the local environment.
The staff at Errigal Hostel, with the help of the An Óige Environmental Group, worked hard to meet the long list of strict criteria needed to achieve this prestigious award.
This impressive custom-built hostel had €3million invested in it in recent years to make the accommodation as modern and sustainable as possible.
It has an energy efficient wood pellet boiler, energy saving lighting, water saving measures and composting and recycling of most materials.
Environmentally friendly cleaning products are used in the hostel and the cost reductions can be passed on to loyal customers making it economically friendly too.
Julie Ann Ennis, Marketing Manager of An Óige, said: “Guests are happy to ‘go green’ too and are encouraged to play their part which enhances their stay and gives them a happy green”glow while keeping the hostel and their holidays eco-friendly.”
The state-of-the-art 60 bed hostel is situated in a stunning corner of county at the foot of Errigal – Donegal’s iconic highest mountain.
As it is right on the Ulster way it is an ideal place for hiking or walking. As well as the challenge of conquering Errigal, one can also visit the picturesque Poisoned Glen, Glenveagh National Park and Castle and the Bloody Foreland and try to spot the famous Green Lady Ghost.
