AN Australian design company appears to have lost its way with a range of Donegal-themed t-shirts based on the movie ‘Straight Outta Compton’.
The unusual garments plugging some of Donegal’s sleepier towns and villages are being advertised by Redbubble, a firm that provides a platform for artists to sell their creations.
Among the merchandise Redbubble has for sale is a ‘Straight Outta Glenties’ t-shirt – a play on the 2015 biopic charting the rise of controversial pioneers of gangsta rap NWA.
Also available in the unlikely range are ‘Straight Outta Laghey’ t-shirts, garments highlighting the south Donegal village with a population of under 200 people.
Sure who would want to get out of lovely Laghey?
What exactly has prompted the online clothing giant to target Donegal in terms of its audience base is unclear and when contacted this week, the company was not available for comment.
On its website though Redbubble says it can provide the t-shirts in 17 different colours. It describes the items as being ‘Straight Outta Compton with a Glenties Donegal twist’.
“Slim fit but if that’s not your thing, order a size up,” says the site.
On being alerted to the clothing line Councillor for the Glenties Municipal District, Micheal Macgiollaeasbuig, said he was both surprised and amused. As to whether he intends to buy one, Councillor Macgiollaeasbuig said he would definitely have a look.
“It’s unusual, that’s for sure. But if it is advertising Glenties and drawing people’s eye to west Donegal then I’m happy with it,” he said.
