ATU Donegal welcomes students with packed Freshers week

Today marks the start of the highly anticipated Freshers’ Week at ATU Donegal, running from September 23rd to 27th, with a full schedule of exciting events to welcome new and returning students.

With a mix of on-campus activities during the day and vibrant nightlife events in partnership with local pubs and clubs, this year promises to be one to remember.

The week kicks off with ‘Spin the Wheel’ on Monday, offering students the chance to win prizes while settling into campus life.

Alongside this, ATU continues its annual voter registration drive, encouraging students to check the register and sign up for local and national elections. Last year’s campaign saw hundreds of students registering to vote, and organisers are aiming for even greater numbers this year.

Tuesday brings a burst of colour to campus with students and staff alike donning their county or country jerseys, celebrating the rich diversity within the ATU community.

The day is jam-packed with information stalls at the Freshers’ Fair and an energetic Sports Day, hosted in collaboration with the ATU Donegal Sports Centre.

Wednesday’s highlight is undoubtedly the Clubs & Societies Day. This year, the event has grown significantly, boasting nearly 50 clubs and societies, almost double from last year.

From competitive sports teams to An Chumann Gaelach and niche interests like the Dungeons and Dragons club, there’s something for everyone. The day will be capped off by an interactive smartphone quiz, ensuring an evening of fun for all.

A fan-favourite, the campus pet farm returns on Thursday, featuring bunnies, alpacas, snakes, and even spiders.

The evening will wind down with a movie night, complete with popcorn and snacks to keep everyone satisfied.

The week’s grand finale on Friday offers a relaxing end with a free pizza lunch and a board game session, giving students a chance to wind down after a week full of action.

Donegal’s nightlife will be in full swing this week, with some of the biggest acts in the country performing at various events.

Fionn Curran, The Highstool Prophets, New Era, and Casper Walsh will keep the crowds entertained, while themed nights like Mamma Mia night, Bingo Loco, and a Trad Night are sure to draw in large crowds.

With student safety a top priority, ATU has organised a ‘Free Freshers Bus’ for evening events. This service, free of charge, will bring students safely back to their accommodation within the town.

“If even one of our students gets a safe lift home after the club on our bus, then that’s money well spent,” said a representative from ATU.
