ATU Donegal are one match away from National glory as they take on SETU Carlow tomorrow in the CUFAI Cup Final in Athlone.

ATU Donegal started the competition with a win on penalties against TUS Midlands in Athlone. They then took on ATU Sligo in the quarter-finals and won 3-0 at home before beating Cork 3-2 in Tallaght Stadium.

The whole squad are local to the county apart from Tom Dockery, who hails from Naas.

However, manager Shane Byrne is without three players due to a fixture clash with the Irish League, and will have to replace Dergview’s Paddy McGarvey, Oran Brogan and Tiernan Brown.

But he is confident the players who come in for them will be more than capable of doing a job.

“There’s an Irish League program on tomorrow night so we’re losing three players to that,” Byrne said.

“They had a game the same day of the semi-final so we were without them then. They all would have started games.

“The boys came in for them in the semi-finals, Stephen Black came in for Oran and scored two.

“But it’s still three bodies down.”

The game takes place in the Athlone Town Stadium, with kick-off at 4pm tomorrow.

The pitch in Athlone is plastic but despite Byrne’s preference, he knows his side will be used to it having won there on penalties in the first round.

And he’s waiting to find out more information on tomorrow’s opponents, who he knows little about having not seen them play.

“Personally speaking I’d rather play on grass rather than artificial but it is what it is, all the young fellas are used to playing on artificial surfaces now.

“We don’t really know much about them, I’m waiting on a phone call back from a fella in Waterford, they played them in the semi-final.

“They have a good pedigree in that competition, they’re a good side and they’ll have a good team.”
