ATU continuing to urge local homeowners to register spare rooms

By Róise Collins

DESPITE positive progress in their recent housing appeal, Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is continuing to urge local homeowners to register spare rooms, as housing demand remains high across all campuses.

The appeal launched on August 1 urged homeowners across the county to register their spare rooms under the national Rent-a-Room scheme, an initiative which aims to relieve pressure on student accommodation while also giving hosts the opportunity to earn up to €14,000 per year tax-free.

Last week, the Donegal News reported a surge in applications from homeowners and landlords across Donegal with close to 200 applications received in recent weeks.

The university’s newly appointed Welfare and Equality Officer, Nasya Mc Jyn Lgelige said this was because of a leaflet drop to homes near both the Letterkenny and Killybegs campuses organised by the Student Union.

Across the four campuses in Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal more than 400 student beds have already been made available for the upcoming academic year.

ATU President, Dr Orla Flynn, has welcomed the strong response from homeowners and landlords who have opened their doors and offered rooms to students.

“This support is making a real difference to young people and their families at a critical time, giving them the chance to begin or continue their studies with less stress and uncertainty.

“It is heartening to see communities across our region respond with such generosity,” she said.

However, Dr Flynn stressed that even though the response has been hugely encouraging, they still need many more beds to meet the housing demand.

“We know there are families, couples, and individuals across the region who may have a spare room and have not yet considered this option.

“By joining the scheme, you can not only support a student’s education journey but also benefit financially through the tax-free Rent-a-Room scheme.

“Every single room makes a difference.”
