Attitudes of Protestant community to be researched

THE attitudes of the Protestant community in the Laggan area of east Donegal on their acceptance within the Republic of Ireland since partition is the basis of a new research opportunity.
An individual or organisation is being sought to research “Attitudes of Protestant Community in Laggan area of East Donegal (and their family members in Northern Ireland) on their acceptance within the Republic of Ireland since the partition of Ireland and Northern Ireland related issues, including the constitutional question.”
The research opportunity is being provided by Holywell Trust in Derry as part of its Future Relationship Conversations.
Holywell Trust is delivering the Future Relationships Conversations project engaging the whole community – with particular focus on those who identify, or have identified, as Protestant, unionist or loyalist. It will focus on attitudes to possible alternative future relationships and constitutional arrangements, including on which arrangements might be most acceptable and which might best hold people to this island.
A spokesperson said: “There is a need, and growing desire across communities, to have a conversation on the future constitutional status of Northern Ireland and Ireland.”
The spokesperson added Brexit has added “an extra dimension to the conversation” and has made the “possibility of a border poll more likely alongside ongoing calls for independence from many in Scotland”.
The spokesperson added: “The Brexit process has also clearly demonstrated the dangers in holding referendums with limited information on the outcome of decisions.”
The successful bidder will produce research that is a robust examination of the topic in the form of a final report. The deadline for the submission of proposals to carry out this work is Friday, February 18, at 4pm.
