Asylum seekers arrive to warm welcome

A welcoming party was in place yesterday as the first tranche of asylum seekers arrived in Letterkenny.

Those who arrived were from an accommodation centre in Portsalon and from other similar facilities dotted around the State.

There were heart warming scenes as members of the Donegal Asylum Seeker Support Group and others held placards and waved flags to welcome Letterkenny’s newest residents.

Writing on their Facebook page, the support group wrote, “We would like to say on behalf of the Support Groups a very Céad Míle Fáilte to all the people moving to Letterkenny today and in the coming weeks and a massive thank you to all the wonderful people of Donegal for all your amazing donations.”

Volunteers with parcels and packages for the new residents.

The arrival in Letterkenny of those seeking international protection had been delayed due to Covid-19. Up to 300 individuals and families are set to take up residence in the former student accommodation over the coming weeks and months.
