Artist ‘overwhelmed’ by the response to new art exhibition

BUNCRANA native Veronica Buchanan recently launched her exhibition ‘Connection’ in the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny.

After her studies in the National College of Art, Veronica went on to teach art for thirty-five years in Scoil Mhuire Buncrana.

Following her recent retirement, Veronica transitioned into a working artist and has exhibited her work in many galleries, both locally and nationally.

Veronica’s compelling work is firmly rooted in her personal experiences, connections, narratives, memories and reflections.

All of which, evoke emotional responses and serve as the foundation of her work.

In ‘Connection’, Veronica has included earlier and current pieces she created using ceramics, textiles, drawing and painting.

The pieces in this exhibition are a collection, which has no beginning or end. All are just part of a journey, with a common thread.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Veronica said the response to her exhibition so far has been “overwhelming”.

“There has been a lovely response. People have been saying they were going to come back to view it on their own.

“I am overwhelmed to be honest,” she said.

Creating a piece called ‘Connection’ for her exhibition, Veronica asked 30 artists and friends to give her a piece of art on material or something that belonged to a loved one that has passed.

Choosing the 30 based on recent conversations, Veronica asked them if they would be interested in getting involved.
“I was delighted with the response, everyone said they were privileged to do it,” she said.

Veronica then intertwined the pieces she received into a dress.

Describing the piece as being an “act of remembrance”, Veronica said it is not about grief.

“It is an act of remembrance for others to think of their loved ones.

“I intertwined their memories in one piece,” she said.

Using art as a form of therapy, Veronica said there is great power in collective creativity.
If you are interested in checking out ‘Collection’, it will be running in the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny until February 24, 2024.
