ARRANMORE’S Paddy Conaghan has started the new year with his own resolution – to take on the lakes of Ireland in aid of Motor Neurone Disease.
The 83-year-old has had an impressive start to 2024 as he began his latest incredible feat that will see him brave the lakes of the 32 counties of Ireland.
Estimated to span six weeks, Paddy’s appropriately named challenge ‘Ducking and Driving around the lakes of Ireland for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association’ (IMNDA) marks Paddy’s third consecutive year taking on this challenge for different charities. This year all funds raised will go towards people living with Motor Neurone Disease and their families.
Paddy began the challenge last Sunday at Loch Eamhnaigh, Arranmore Island, and took on Lough Gill, Co Leitrim on Monday for day two, coinciding with his 83rd birthday. His journey has taken him to Sligo and Achill.
“I am thrilled to once again take on this exciting challenge, swimming across the many lakes dotting the landscape of our 32 counties, all in support of the IMNDA,” said Paddy.
“It won’t be easy, it’s bitterly cold, but the generosity and support of donors and well-wishers spurs me on and enables us to make a real difference in the lives of those battling MND.”
The personal challenge invites supporters and well-wishers to join Paddy at various lakes across the country to cheer him on as he takes the plunge. His journey and progress can be followed on his Facebook page, where details of his next swims are posted daily.
