Arranmore RNLI have responded to two call-outs in two days.
On Sunday, September 1 at 4.30pm, Arranmore RNLI volunteer crew were tasked by Malin Head Coast Guards to assist a boat in difficulty off Tory Island.
A spokesperson said: “Prior to arriving on scene at the stricken vessel, the Bunbeg Coast Guard boat had reached the casualty and secured the safety of all on board. The lifeboat returned to base and prepared the boat for service.”
Their second call out came yesterday, Monday, September 2 at 6.30pm when the Coast Guard in Dublin requested the lifeboat to launch to reports of a person in the water off Marameelin, Dungloe.
A spokesperson said: “On arrival on scene, the Coast Guard rescue helicopter 118 had rescued the person from the water for transfer to Letterkenny University Hospital. Unfortunately the casualty did not survive.”
Relief Resilience coxswain, Trevor Devereux said: “On behalf of Arranmore RNLI we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family, also, we would also like to thank the Coast Guard staff with who we work very closely, it is always very sad when the outcome of a rescue isn’t successful.”
Trevor, from Kilmore Quay in Wexford is providing cover on Arranmore since the retirement of coxswain Jimmy Early.
Trevor is also relief coxswain at Kilmore Quay and his father served as coxswain on the Lifeboat prior to his retirement.
Both Trevor’s two sons and wife are crew members on the lifeboat at Kilmore Quay Lifeboat.
“I suppose the sea and lifeboats are in the blood,” he said.
