Arranmore event to showcase island's innovative ideas

Take a trip to Arranmore Island this Saturday to hear first hand how the island is innovating to promote growth and create a sustainable future for the next generation. Arranmore Island Community Council are inviting visitors to explore their new digital hub during the event which runs on October 5th from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.

Spokesperson Seamus Bonner said: “Hear how we are using technology to bring jobs and make our traditional industries more sustainable. We look forward to hearing from others who are doing the same or thinking of starting to make their community a more vibrant place to live and work.”

During this informal workshop, speakers will learn about their computer programming club Codordojo Árainn Mhór: Arranmore Island was the first in the north west to set up a Coderdojo – the worldwide kids coding club movement started in Ireland in 2011. The club is passing digital skills on to local children and has attracted tech experts from as far away as the City of London to come as guest mentors. Seamus himself is the club co-ordinator and you can also hear from the children who take part.

You can also hear about the amazing Elearning hub on Árainn Mhór: The island’s secondary school is participating in this national project which offers virtual classes in e.g. sciences subjects like Physics, which would not otherwise be available.

“You have probably already heard from tv or radio about our cross-island Connectivity Digital Hub project with Three Ireland, but you can find out more about MODAM – Ireland’s first offshore shared digital workspace, as that is where the workshop will be based,” said Seamus.

Speaking about remote working and virtual offices Seamus said: “The island’s reputation for technical innovation and breathtaking beauty is spreading far and wide. This has led to enquiries from people interested in working remotely from the island, and businesses interested in setting up offices there.”
