Owenea FM’s new studio complex at Kentucky, Ardara, was packed to capacity on Sunday for the official opening by Cllr. Terence Slowey.
Before cutting the opening ribbon Cllr, Slowey spoke live on air about the huge contribution the station made to the area of Ardara, Glenties, Portnoo and Rosbegs. He also paid tribute to all the radio presenters and others involved in creating such a success.
Pauric Gallagher, Station Manager, emphasised that its achievement was the result of a strong team effort and the support of its very loyal band of listeners, both local and over the internet. That had been illustrated by the close of broadcasting on Sunday evening when over 1,700 had logged on, via donegalsounds.com, from around the world to listen to the station during Saturday and Sunday.
The huge crowd listened and watched as Martin Gildea and Chris Collum presented their country and western music show. Young singing star Simon Peters was in the studio to sing on air. Children attending had an opportunity to meet Father Christmas, helped by an Elf, and post letters to him.
Among those interviewed by Martin Gildea and Chris Collum during the afternoon was the Rev. John Deane of the Church of Ireland. Now with a 100 day licence, Owenea FM will be broadcasting each Saturday and Sunday, with the exception of this Sunday (22nd) which will be replaced by a programme on Christmas Eve.
